Gulf Coast Wrestlers Reunion

Where Grudges are Forgotten, and Friendships are Renewed

1994 Gulf Coast Wrestler's Reunion

On March 4-5, 1994, over 55 wrestlers, referees and promoters gathered in Irvington, (AL) at the Mobile International Speedway for the 3rd Annual Gulf Coast Wrestler's Reunion for a great time of food, fellowship and fun.

Most of the guests began to arrive at the motel on Friday morning and were scattered all over the parking lot for most of the day.   The official reunion began on Friday evening as everyone gathered to renew old friendships and enjoy finger foods.   Registration began on Saturday morning and the "11:00 a.m." opening bell rang at 11:50  (I figured it must be Mobile Central Time).

Rip Tyler and Cowboy Bob Kelly called the reunion to order and made the opening remarks.   Following that were reports from Don Fields (treasurer) and Bill Bowman (secretary).

After "Gorgeous" George Grant led a memorial ceremony for those who had passed away, Bill Bowman and Terry Latham presented the annual awards:

Golden Crowbar Award  --  Curtis Smith
Potato Award  --  Frank Morrell
Speedy Hatfield Award  --  Dick Dunn
Special Recognition  --  Charlie Smith, Eddie Sullivan, and Scott Teal

After a great covered dish dinner, the stage was opened to anyone who wished to tell a funny story or share a memorable experience.   A few of those who participated (that I can remember) and the subject they talked about included:

Dick Steinborn (Billy Hines and a wrestling card made in Heaven; Dick Dunn's buggy-whip arms)
Tony Gonzales (appreciation for those who helped make him successful in the business)
Gene Dundee (the story of his death and miraculous return to life)
Johnny Eagle (Rip Tyler and toilet paper)
Billy Wicks (the time a wrestling bear turned in his muzzle and quit the promotion because Treach Phillips was working too stiff)
Mack York (story about Dick Dunn and a shotgun)
Mae Young (LIWA)
Charlie Smith (how they made extra money in Atlanta)
Buddy Wayne ("Memphis Memories")
Sputnik Monroe (his "love letter" to Jackie Welch)
Scott Teal (a humorous story about Gorgeous George Grant)
Dandy Jack Donovan (belated apologies to the boys he potatoed)
Lee Fields (tag team match with Les Welch against Mighty Jumbo)
Terry Latham ("10 Things Not To Do ...")

The entertainment was provided by members of the Fields (Hatfield) family as they lip-synched and acted to well-known songs.   The show was closed with a rendition of The Blue Cyclone (a song made famous by singer Ray Stevens) as the Cyclone was finally pinned and counted out by referee Speedy Hatfield.   Randy Tyler closed the reunion with prayer.   In addition to those already mentioned, some of those who attended included Les and Jack Welch, Joe "Sky" Turner, Corsica Joe and Sara Lee, Don Greene, Gorgeous George Grant, Michael Hayes, John Tatum, Paul Bearer, Tony Charles, Pat Barrett, Jim White, Fabulous Moolah, Diamond Lil, Cora and Debbie Combs, Bob Boyer, and Bobby Fields.

Thanks to the hard work of many people, everyone who attended had a great time.   Special appreciation must be given to Don and Florence Fields, Lee and Ida Fields, Eddie Sullivan (who donated personalized hats, T-shirts and jackets), Terry Latham, Rip Tyler, Buster Fay (who cooked the most delicious Bar-B-Q), Bill and Ann Bowman, Lucille Welch, Bob Kelly, and the entire Hatfield family for the countless hours they put into the organization of this event.   Please forgive me if I left anyone out.

Everyone who gave of their time and talents were instrumental in making this a weekend that none of us will ever forget.
