2000 Gulf Coast Wrestler's Reunion
The 9th Annual Gulf Coast Reunion took place on March 10-11, 2000. As always, the entertainment was top-notch. The theme for Friday night was "The Fifties" and Chris Kelly won the Best Dressed competition. Cowboy Bob Kelley opened the entertainment with "I Can't Stop Loving You," as several couples danced.
On the Friday evening show, vocalists included:
Bobby Simmons - Peace in the Valley
Anne Charles and Norman Frederick Charles III - "Norman"
Karl Roach
"Fats Domino", aka Bob Kelly - "Blueberry Hill" and two other hits.
Other acts featured Billy Wicks as The Big Bopper and Terry Lathan as Karnac the Great.
Scott Teal was the Master of Ceremonies once again this year and opened the Saturday program by showing a card that black dots mysteriously appeared and disappeared. He talked about a girl that camped out on Sputnik Monroe's doorstep the previous night, plus a story about Ted Oates getting a "John Deere" letter.
Karl Roach sang "How Great Thou Art" and the heart-wrenching song written by Len Rossi, "The Wrestler's Prayer." Billy Wicks played the harmonica (The Harmonica Song). Ida Mae Martinez, the "cowgirl yodeler, gave an encore of one of the songs she performed on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show."
Curtis "Smitty" Smith and the Wrestling Bluegrass Boys were the backup band for several of the musical acts and performed "Uncle Penn"
Also featured was Dick Beyer, who told the story of how he became Destroyer. With the help of Norman Frederick Charles, Dick Steinborn presented the "Danny Hodge Opera Production" for the year 2000. Cowboy Bob Kelly lip-synched "God Must Have Been a Cowboy," followed by comedy routines by Burrhead Jones and Ida Fields. Bobby Simmons did an encore of the favorite, "Old Friends."
As always, the highlight of the show were the comedy skits presented by the Fields Boys (Randy, Shane, Bobby and Ricky), including The Pirates of Penzance, Elvira, and It's Me Again Margaret.
Pioneer awards went to Bruce Austin, Bill Dromo and Rocket Monroe. The Legend awards went to Buddy Colt and Jim White. The coveted Speedy Hatfield Award was presented to Cowboy Bob Kelly.
The show was closed as the group joined hands and sang "May the Circle Be Unbroken."
